Guidelines

This section of our website will feature practice guidelines which may be of interest to our members and will not be limited to nephrology only. The emphasis will be on guidelines developed locally.

The following documents were adopted by the SA Renal Society:

– Renal Palliative and Supportive Care in South Africa
– Guideline for the optimal care of patients on chronic dialysis in South Africa
– Guideline for chronic dialysis in children in South Africa
– Guideline for the care of patients with acute kidney injury

The Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism puts forth the principles which should govern ethical organ transplantation. Also read the Lancet Commentary on the Declaration as well as the WHO Guiding Principles on Transplantation. Professional societies and governments are urged to endorse the Declaration and, where this is lacking, to develop regulations to implement the principles contained therein. SARS is one of the organisations that have formally endorsed the Declaration.

South African Nephrology Society: consensus statement on the use of hypoxia-inducible factor-prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors
